A lithium-ion battery testers says that, the 7,000-cell battery found in the electric-powered Tesla roadster may lead to failure problems in the future. "If there are 7,000 cells, and there's one in ten million failures, you do the math in terms of how many vehicles are going to have a cell problem," said the tester, Dan Doughty.

The problem is, of course, exploding batteries. Since the Tesla is gaining traction as being the first affordable electric car (the family sedan for model year 2008 should be around $45,000), images of exploding cars piling up on America's highways, filling the evening news are just slightly unsettling.

That mystery Korean UMPC we showed you a few weeks back has just been de-mystified. It's called the Vega, and runs the full-blown Windows XP Operating System on it. Best yet, it costs about 70 Million Won ($700).

The UMPC-like device has an AMD Geode LX800 CPU, Windows XP Home (bleh), 256MB of RAM, a 30GB hard disk, WiFi, USB, a 4.3-inch LCD, GPS connector, and USB connectors for a keyboard and TV over DMB. It's available in September in Korea, so UMPC fans—all 58 of you—may want to wait and check this out when a full announcement comes August 10th. Maybe this non-UMPC UMPC will perform better than the ones we've reviewed.

Franklin Wireless USB EV-DO Card.

The Franklin USB EV-DO card is perfect for readers with laptops that don't have a PCMCIA or ExpressCard slot, or those with tablets, PDAs, and UMPCs. This goes directly into the USB slot, unlike the Novatel, which had a separate cable but looks bit bulky in comparison. Franklin's solution seems a bit more compact.

Performance on the Sony device that Dave tested it with seemed pretty good. The only problems we can see with it is the delicate-looking antenna and the fact that it's directly connected to the USB port instead of with a cable like Novatel's. A slight bump would probably rip the card right out of the USB socket, something that's bound to happen at least once or twice in a mobile device.

Microsoft commissioned special-edition cans of the Lemon-Lime Talking Rain sparkling water for their employees, complete with Vista logo and an intranet link for them to find out more information about Vista.
